Standard rattan marshal authorization process

General requirements

There are three near-equal priorities in marshaling; safety, fair witness, and showmanship. Overemphasizing any one of these at the expense of the others will tend to make the fighting less enjoyable for everyone (although, if you must go overboard on one, pick safety).

  1. A marshal may be authorized after demonstrating the ability to oversee combat, judge a fighter's authorization, and inspect weapons and armor.
  2. All authorized marshals in the West are warranted (they must be members of the SCA) however, only those designated as Senior marshals may authorize other fighters and only the Earl Marshal or their designee{s} may authorize Senior marshals (See Senior marshal section for details).
  3. While is is permissible for a 16 or 17 year old to be authorized as a marshal, no individual under the age of 18 may be a Knights Marshal (local group marshal regardless of whether they are a knight of even rattan fighter) or the marshal-in-charge of an event or practice.
  4. A Senior rattan marshal must witness the authorization process and approve its successful result.
  5. A marshal candidate does not have to be (or ever have been) an authorized rattan fighter but care should be taken that the individual has an exceptional understanding if the rules and has exceptional judgement regarding fighting concerns.

At a minimum, a Marshal's authorization shall include the following:

  1. The candidate must have a good working knowledge of the Rules of the Lists, the Society conventions of combat, and any additional kingdom rules or conventions.
  2. The candidate must be willing to enforce the Rules of the Lists, the Society conventions of combat, and any additional kingdom rules or conventions even when facing very experienced fighters
  3. The candidate must have a good working knowledge of the Society minimum armor and weapons standards and any additional kingdom armor and weapons standards.
  4. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to conduct an inspection of armor and weapons for use in combat.
  5. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to safely control SCA combat, whether this is single combat, team combat, general melee, or part of a war environment.

Once a marshal authorization is completed, the individual must input the new status in the West Kingdom Authorization Database

  1. As with fighter authorizations, they will submit the name of the authorizing Senior who will be notified in order to confirm the change in status. As they are now a marshal, they will also need to submit a copy of their membership status. The process for doing so is on the database.
  2. Authorization Database link:https://sites.google.com/westkingdom.org/west-kingdom-authorizations/home
  3. If you have questions or difficulties, the email for the Authorizations volunteer staff is: authroizations@westkingdom.org
