Authorization process

Requirements

  1. To conduct a fighter authorization, the following are needed:
    • Senior Marshal to conduct the authorization procedure ("authorizing marshal")
    • Experienced, armored fighter, to fight against/with authorizing fighter
    • New/returning fighter(s) to be authorized ("authorizing fighter")
  2. For authorizations involving minors (any person aged 16 or 17), the Earl Marshal, Kingdom Heavy Marshal, or a duly appointed marshal (by the Earl Marshal) is required to conduct the authorization.
    1. Minors may only be authorized with their legal guardian present.
    2. The marshal must follow the extra steps required for minor authorizations.

Documentation

  1. The authorizing fighter must have a signed waiver to participate in armored combat. Thus, the authorizing fighter must have one of the following:
  2. Once the authorization is completed, the process includes filling out the authorization database linked below. An e-waiver will still need to be signed on the database - even if you signed a physical waiver or have a blue card.

Armor and weapons inspection

  1. The authorizing fighter must successfully pass a full and comprehensive armor and weapon inspection (shield too, if present).
    • Failing the armor/weapon inspection, means an immediate failure of fighter authorization.
      • Note: Depending on the severity of the failure, the fighter may be informed of the deficiencies and given the opportunity to address the issues. Once all of the deficiencies have been addressed the fighter may be allowed to restart the authorization process.
    • It is preferred that the authorizing fighter not complete an authorization in borrowed armor as it rarely fits well.
    • The West Kingdom armor check process can be also be found at https://westkingdom.org/activities/armored-combat

Theory test - Rules of the List

  1. Authorizing fighter must demonstrate a good working knowledge of the Rules of the Lists (found in this handbook). This can be accomplished in the following ways:
    • The authorizing fighter recites the rules to the authorizing marshal
    • The authorizing marshal conducts an oral quiz with the authorizing fighter to determine their familiarity with the rules of the lists

Theory test- standards and conventions

  1. The authorizing fighter must demonstrate a good working knowledge of the rules of combat and armor standards as well as the West Kingdom conventions of combat, as specified in the West Kingdom Combat Manual:
    • This is accomplished by an oral quiz conducted by the authorizing marshal, paying particular attention to West Kingdom specific rules and conventions
  2. The link to the kingdom page with the Kingdom and Society handbooks (the rules) can be found on this page: https://sites.google.com/westkingdom.org/armoredcombatresources/the-rules

Theory test - evaluation

  1. If the authorizing fighter demonstrates a lack of knowledge of the Rules of the Lists, West Kingdom Conventions of Combat, or armor and weapons standards:
    • If the lack of knowledge is, in the authorizing marshal's determination, significant, the authorizing fighter will fail the authorization procedure and no further examination is needed at that time. In this case, the authorizing fighter should be instructed to come back and try again after they have better familiarize themselves with the Rules of the Lists, West Kingdom Conventions of Combat, or armor and weapons standards, such as the particular deficiency requires.
    • If the authorizing marshal determines the lack of knowledge is minor, they may choose to provide instructional correction and continue the authorization procedure.

Practical test

  1. The authorizing marshal, with the help and participation of the experienced fighter on hand, shall conduct a practical test of the authorizing fighter's competence, safety, and familiarity with the function of heavy armored combat.
    • During each phase of the practical test, the authorizing marshal shall observe every aspect of the authorizing fighter's performance. The practical test is accomplished by having the experienced fighter, who’s assisting with the authorization, engage with the authorizing fighter in a number of test bouts.
    • These should be done to test a variety of scenarios, in an effort to test the authorizing fighter’s response the breadth of situations in which they may find themselves.

Evaluation

  1. Once oral and practical test are complete, the authorizing marshal must determine the following:
    • Does the authorizing fighter know and apply the Rules of the Lists and the conventions of combat?
    • Does the authorizing fighter exhibit safe behavior on the field, both for themselves and for others?
    • How does the authorizing fighter react to pressure? Do they fight back, or do they become disoriented and confused?
    • Can the authorizing fighter defend themselves?
    • Is the authorizing fighter able to feel and judge blows, both those received and those thrown?

Passing the test

  1. If the authorizing marshal determines that the authorizing fighter meets these requirements for authorization, the authorizing marshal will notify the authorizing fighter that they are now authorized. The authorizing marshal shall inform the newly authorized fighter that they must report the new authorization through the online portal.
  2. In the West, authorization information must be sent to: https://sites.google.com/westkingdom.org/west-kingdom-authorizations/home.
    • Best practices would be for the Senior Marshal and the fighter to fill out the database at the time of the authorization. If this is not possible, then the fighter should be given a copy of the authorizations database link along with the modern and mundane name of the Senior Marshal.

Follow-up actions

  1. Follow-up actions for completing an authorization:
    1. The authorizing marshal is urged to record the following information, so that they may confirm the authorization when asked to do so by the authorization team:
      • SCA and modern name of fighter
      • Date and event/practice at which the authorization took place (for recollection purposes only)
      • Let the authorizing fighter know that the authorization is not formally recorded until they complete the information in the database. The authorizations team will confirm the authorization with the Senior Marshal and send out a physical card. The database has a public access page of authorized fighters.
    2. Once the fighter has submitted all required information to the database, the Senior Marshal will be contacted to confirm the authorization
    3. Even if a physical waiver had to be signed at the time of authorization or they had a blue card, the electronic version on the database site will still need to be signed.
  2. The new fighter is warned to not delay completing the database information as, until it is completed, there is no official record of the authorization
  3. In the West, all questions about the database should be directed to the Authorizations Database Deputy at: authorizations@westkingdom.org

Re-authorization procedure

  1. Regardless of how recently the fighter's authorization has lapsed, the authorizing marshal must test the fighter on their knowledge of the rules, particularly any rules that have changed within the last 4 years.
  2. If the authorizing marshal has not seen the candidate fight recently enough to confirm that they still meet the required competencies, observe them during combat and confirm that they are still competent, or run through the practical test.
  3. If a fighter has been sanctioned (e.g. had their authorization removed or suspended), the authorizing marshal must confirm that the issues relating to the sanction have been addressed.
  4. Once you have completed the re-authorization process with a Senior Marshal, documentation of the reauthorization is completed by the fighter online on the West Kingdom Authorization Database. The Senior Marshal will be notified by the authorizations database team of your request and will confirm that the re-authorization request is valid.
