Kingdom marshalate

General

  1. Kingdoms must document their marshalate structure and process for the authorization of marshals for this discipline.
  2. The general Society requirements for marshals, authorities and responsibilities are found in:
    1. Marshalate - Overview, and
    2. Marshalate - Responsibilities and chain of command.
  3. In addition, Northshield has the following marshal types, requirements, and responsibilities:

Northshield's armored combat marshalate structure

Armored combat marshal-in-training (ACMiT)

  1. A marshal-in-training (MiT) is a deliberate classification. One must be supervised by a Level 3 armored combat marshal to be a marshal-in-training. The primary duty of a marshal-in-training is to learn the rules of the lists, the conventions of combat, and the methods of performing marshalate duties, with the intent of becoming an authorized marshal.
    1. One does not have to be an authorized rattan fighter to become an armored combat marshal-in-training or armored combat level 1 marshal.
    2. Minors aged 16 and 17 may be marshals-in-training and authorize to become marshals.
    3. Marshals-in-training are warranted.
    4. Marshals-in-training must be current paid members of SCA, Inc.
    5. Marshals-in-training must report quarterly though the kingdom website.
    6. Marshals-in-training must have a minimum of one armored combat authorization and must achieve a second authorization before they complete training.
      1. Marshals-in-training that wish to become a Level 1 marshal do not need to be authorized.
  2. A marshal in training may NOT:
    1. Be a marshal-in-charge of an event
    2. Instruct or train other marshals
  3. All official activities performed by a marshal-in-training must be supervised by an Level 3 armored combat marshal. This includes, but is not limited to:
    1. Armor inspection
    2. Assisting in rattan authorizations (as a non-signing marshal)
    3. Marshaling single combat
    4. Marshaling melee or war combat
  4. A marshal-in-training, at the direction of a warranted marshal, may perform boundary control, without the direct supervision of an Level 3 marshal

Armored Combat Marshal Level 1 (ACM1)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown.
  2. One does not have to be an authorized rattan fighter to become an armored combat field marshal level 1.
  3. Requirements and duties:
    1. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
    2. Must submit an annual report at the year end reporting period using the online form on the Northshield website.
    3. Have a good working knowledge of the Rules of the Lists, conventions of combat, and the armored combat standards
    4. Perform armor inspection.
    5. Marshal armored single combat, armored melee combat, and armored war combat
    6. Can serve as a local branch marshal.
    7. Can act as marshal-in-charge of a practice.
    8. Can serve as a marshal-in-charge of an event.
  4. An armored combat marshal level 1 may NOT:
    1. Assist in authorization or sign any authorization paperwork.
      1. Marshals who were previously authorized combatants, but are unable to actively fight may have this restriction waived on a case by case basis. This is to be determined by the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal and the Kingdom Earl Marshal.

Armored Combat Marshal Level 2 (ACM2)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown.
  2. Requirements and duties:
    1. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
    2. Must submit an annual report at the year end reporting period using the online form on the Northshield website.
    3. Have a good working knowledge of the Rules of the Lists, conventions of combat, and the armored combat standards
    4. Must be authorized in a minimum of two armored combat weapon forms.
    5. Perform armor inspection.
    6. Perform armored combat authorizations ( per 18.4.6 Authorization ).
    7. Marshal rattan single combat, armored melee combat, and armored war combat.
    8. Can serve as a local branch marshal
    9. Can act as marshal-in-charge of a practice
    10. Can serve as a marshal-in-charge of an event.

Armored Combat Marshal Level 3 (ACM3)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown
  2. All the duties and responsibilities of an armored combat marshal level 2.
  3. Trains marshals and marshals-in-training.
  4. Must have held a valid marshal authorization for four years.
  5. Must be authorized in Armored Combat One Handed (1H) weapons and Armored Combat Two Handed (2H) weapons. Candidates are encouraged to be authorized in one melee weapon form also (Spear, Combat Archery, or Siege).

Armored Combat Group Marshals (ACGM)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown for a specific local branch.
  2. Act as the authority for all martial activities performed in a local branch. This could include practices and/or fighting events.
  3. Requirements and duties:
    1. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
    2. Oversee all armored combat martial activities in one's branch
    3. Provide quarterly reports on the state of martial activities in a given branch, to the Regional Marshal that oversees one's branch.
      1. This should include information on cantons, within a Barony.
      2. Include all compiled information provided by branch marshals of any cantons
    4. Organize any needed marshals for armored fighting events that take place in one's branch
    5. Is the marshal-in-charge of their groups armored combat practice.
    6. Appoints deputies to handle disciplines (armored combat, rapier, etc.) they are not warranted in unless those officers already exist in the group structure.
    7. Group marshals-in-training must have reached the age of 18 (eighteen).

Armored combat group marshal-in-training (ACGMiT)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown for a specific local branch.
  2. Armored combat group marshal-in-training must have reached the age of 18 (eighteen).
  3. Armored combat group marshal-in-training serve groups when a fully warranted marshal is not available to serve the group as Group Marshal.
  4. All the duties and responsibilities of an armored combat group marshals EXCEPT:
    1. Armored combat group marshal-in-training may not assist in authorization or sign any authorization paperwork.
  5. They must work with their Regional or Deputy Marshal to fulfill the requirements for becoming a warranted marshal.

Armored Combat Regional Marshals (ACRM)

  1. Warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown for a specific region.
  2. The Armored Combat Regional Marshal is a point of contact between a region's armored community and the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal.
  3. Requirements:
    1. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
    2. Preferred to be an Armored Combat Marshal Level 3.
    3. Compile all reports from their area into one report and submit it to the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal quarterly, within seven (7) days of the report due date for group marshals.
  4. Duties:
    1. Be a point of contact for the region's armored combat community. This includes:
      1. Answering questions, providing/opinions on rules for armored combat.
      2. Reporting and analyzing incidents.
      3. Being an arbitrator when needed.
      4. Making sure that people in the region are kept up to date regarding changes to the rules.
    2. Keep the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal informed about the status of armored combat activities in the region. See the Reporting guidelines chapter of the marshal's handbook. This includes:
      1. Summarizing quarterly and year end reports from marshals.
      2. Providing reports, judgements, and analysis on incidents happening in the region. Note: Serious injury reports are sent directly to the Kingdom Earl Marshal and Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal.
      3. Provide updates on changes to the region's marshaling community.
    3. Oversee the marshals-in-training for their region.

Deputy for Artillery Arts (DEMAA)

  1. Warranted as Deputy for Combat Archery and Siege by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown.
  2. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
  3. All the duties and responsibilities of an Armored Combat Marshal Level 3
    1. Can train and authorizes marshals in combat archery and siege.
    2. Reviews new equipment and advises participants on the proper construction of projectiles and siege equipment.
  4. Must submit an annual report at the year end reporting period using the online form on the Northshield website.

Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal (KACM)

  1. Appointed and warranted by the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown as the Deputy Earl Marshal for Armored Combat
  2. Must be a current member of SCA, Inc.
  3. Preferred to be an Armored Combat Marshal Level 3.
  4. All the duties and responsibilities of an armored combat marshal level 3.
  5. Will promote the safe and orderly conduct of armored combat in the Kingdom.
  6. Compile all reports from their regional marshals into one report and submit to the Kingdom Earl Marshal quarterly, within twelve (12) days of the report due date for group marshals.

Kingdom Earl Marshal (KEM)

  1. Warranted by the Society Marshal and the Crown.
  2. Must be a current paid member of SCA, Inc.
  3. The Earl Marshal is a Great Officer of the Kingdom and the representative of the Crown on all matters concerning martial activities within the Kingdom
  4. The Earl Marshal, or their specific designee(s), is the only one who may elevate a marshal to the position of Armored Combat Marshal Level 1, 2, and 3.
  5. The Earl Marshal reports directly to the Crown and the Society Marshal
  6. Must provide quarterly reports to the Society Marshal and share those reports with the Stallari Council.

Northshield's marshal authorization process

Standard marshal-in-training process

  1. Requirements:
    1. Candidate must have reached the age of 16 (sixteen), and be a member of the society in good standing.
      1. Group marshals-in-training must be members of the society so that they have access to the Kingdom newsletter.
      2. Group marshals-in-training must have reached the age of 18 (eighteen).
    2. Candidate must have a minimum of one authorization in any weapon style and achieve a second authorization before warranting to a full marshal. Youth sparring authorization does not apply to these requirements.
      1. Marshals-in-training that wish to become a Level 1 marshal do not need to be authorized.
  2. Process:
    1. Candidate will notify their regional deputy of their interest in becoming a marshal-in-training.
    2. Upon approval and validation of membership from their regional, they will be considered a marshal-in-training and may begin their training.
    3. Marshal-in-training will be responsible for printing off the marshal-in-training tracking form from the Kingdom website.
    4. A marshal-in-training may receive up to 3 (three) signatures on the form per event they attend.
      1. An Armored Combat Marshal Level 3 will only sign an area they are satisfied that the marshal-in-training shows proficient knowledge and skill in.
    5. While serving as a marshal-in-training, they must report each quarter as a minimum.
    6. Once the marshal-in-training has received all necessary signatures and the required number of weapon authorizations, as applicable, the form should be passed on to their regional or the Deputy Earl Marshal for their combat activity for final review.
    7. Once the marshal-in-training has demonstrated proficient knowledge/skill in all areas the Kingdom Earl Marshal and regional/Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal will sign off on the form and recommend to the Crown that the marshal-in-training become a marshal Level 1 or 2 as appropriate.
      1. Only the Kingdom Earl Marshal and the Crown may warrant an individual. Until the warrant has been confirmed the individual is still a marshal-in-training, and may not serve in a role that only warranted marshals may serve.

Promotion to Armored Combat Marshal Level 3

  1. Once all requirements are met, the Armored Combat Marshal level 2 desiring promotion to level 3 should contact the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal.
  2. Promotion is not guaranteed.
  3. Petition and documentation will be reviewed and decided on by the Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal with consultation of the Kingdom Earl Marshal.
  4. Kingdom Armored Combat Marshal will inform the petitioning marshal of the decision in a timely manner and update their status on the Kingdom website.

Maintaining the warrant

  1. Membership must be maintained in order for a marshal to remain warranted. If membership lapses, the marshal may not perform the duties of the list until their membership has been restored.
  2. Marshals must participate in one continuing education session within the span of their authorization.
  3. Marshals must submit their year end report by November 25th.
    1. Failure to do so will result in a suspension of their warrant until they file their year end report.
    2. If a marshal misses two consecutive reporting deadlines, their warrant will be removed and they must follow the re-warrant process.

Re-warrant process:

  1. In addition to meeting all Society requirements, individuals who have previously held a warrant must complete the following:
    1. Completing a verbal test issued by their regional marshal.
    2. Complete the new Marshal Reauthorization procedure customized by the Kingdom Earl Marshal as needed.
  2. If the warrant has lapsed for a year or longer, the individual must complete the Marshal-in-training process. The requirements for completion may be waived or modified on a case by case basis by the kingdom deputy officer for the related activity, or the Kingdom Earl Marshal.
