Sample inspection for skill at arms weapons and equipment

The safety standards vary greatly depending upon the type of weapon and how it is used. All inspections and decisions should be made with the following considerations:

1. Check that the weapon is in good repair. (e.g. doesn't seem like it will fall apart with use).
2. Check that it is made of appropriate material (non-brittle materials, e.g. metal, wood, synthetic simulators).
3. Weapons must be of a size and weight that allows them to be used safely and controlled by the person wielding it.
   1. How balanced is the weapon? The weapon should not be awkward to use or throw.
   2. Is the weapon either excessively light or heavy for the person using it?
   3. Is the weapon either excessively short or long for the person using it?
   4. Is the distance this weapon will travel appropriate for the range where it is being used?
4. Shafts - check for major cracks, burrs or rough surfaces that could cut or give splinters to an unprotected hand.
5. Swords - check that quillons and pommels do not have sharp or pointed ends.
6. Metal tips
   1. Check that they are firmly attached to the shaft.
   2. If thrown, is it sharp enough to stick in the target?
7. Axes - check that the handle is firmly attached. Sliding heads are not allowed.
