Wood tip jousting lances

1. Lances must consist of a base with a socket, a replaceable wooden tip, and a coronel.
2. Must be 8-10 feet (2.4-3 m) as measured from the top (forward edge) of the rider's hand to the tip of the coronel.
3. The base and socket:
   1. Should be shaped to a historical pattern, and made of non-brittle materials.
   2. Must measure no less than 60 inches (1520 mm) and no greater than 82 inches (2080 mm) forward of the grip to the end inside of the socket receiving the replaceable tip.
   3. The socket must be made of sturdy non-brittle materials, such as aluminum tube, with an interior diameter of at least 1 1/4 inches (32 mm).
4. The replaceable wooden tip must be balsa wood or fir, and be 1 1/4 inches (32 mm) in diameter and 36 inches (910 mm) in length.
   1. Balsa tips must "quartered" by being cut up the middle lengthwise for 24 inches (610 mm) and then rotated 90 degrees and cut up the middle lengthwise for 18 inches (460 mm).
   2. Fir tips must be spiral cut. The cuts must be at a 45 degree angle and usually 3/16 - 1/4 inch (4.75 - 6 mm) deep. Spiral cuts need to be deep enough to cause a break, but shallow enough that the tips won’t easily break when you handle them (1/4 inch (6 mm) works well). Cuts must not be less than 3/4 inch (19 mm) nor more than 1 1/2 inches (38 mm) apart. (A 45-degree angle will make the cuts about 1 1/4 inches (32 mm) apart.)
5. Coronel - The end of the tip must be securely covered by a cap at least 1 1/4 inches (32 mm) in diameter, and must be made of non-brittle materials such as rubber, copper, leather, etc.
   1. There should be no hard/sharp protrusions where horse contact could take place (i.e. metal shaped coronels).
   2. Suitable caps include commercially available urethane coronels, rubber furniture or crutch pads or suitably sized copper plumbing caps.
