Notes - Equipment standards - Handheld weapons

General

Rule removed - November 2015
The following rule was removed: "Weapons under 48" (1.22 m) or greater than 7' 6" (2.29 m) in length may have either a thrusting tip or a butt spike, but not both at the same time. The madu was not a weapon of individual combat during the SCA's period of study, and therefore it is excluded from SCA Armored Combat."

Single-handed weapons

Thrusting tip thickness - October 2023
Thrusting tip resilient material changed from 3/4 (0.75) inch to 1/2 (0.5) inch. The 1/2 inch thickness had been successfully used in Trimaris for 10 years with no issues.

Spears

Fiberglass spear caps - October 2023
Clarification to allow schedule-40 PVC cap or equivalent to remove issues with the legality of commonly used commericially available spear tips being used safely across the SCA.
Mandrake tips removed from use on weapons over - October 2023
2-inch Mandrake rubber tips have been removed from use on all weapons over 7 1/2 feet (2.29m). There is a risk of them folding and penetrating a bar grill.
Maximum spear length reduced - October 2023
Maximum length reduced from 12 feet to 9 feet to improve game play and simplify rules. This change only affected 6 kingdoms that still used 12-foot spears.
Mention of Mandrake style rubber tips removed - March 2015
Mention of Mandrake style rubber tips removed from fiberglass spears. Mandrake 2-inch rubber tips were not tested on spears.
