New page

{{ChapterInfo|Equestrian Handbook|40|Appendix - Jereed rules and equipment}}
==Jereed==

Jereed is a traditional Turkish game, dating back to 11th century, where players scored points by throwing a blunt wooden javelin at the opposing team's riders. In the Ottoman Empire, the game became very popular and widespread throughout the Ottoman territories. It is still played today in the Anatolian provinces at weddings and regional festivals.

In the SCA, jereed foam-tipped thrown weapon simulators are used. Teams can include riders, or riders vs. ground players.

===Equipment===
# Jereed - any simulator can be used that can be thrown from distance, and is padded to not cause injury to horse or rider.
#* Suggested simulator: Foam missile footballs with the tail extended by a 3 foot section of 1/2 inch PEX tubing, secured with tape. Painted or other method to disguise modern elements.
#Rider - Eye protection is recommended.
#Horse - [[Equestrian:Equipment standards - Armor#Horse_eye_protection|Horse eye protection]] is required.

===Recommended conventions===
# Riders are divided into 2 teams.
# Each rider has 2 lives.
# Each rider starts with 2 jereeds.
# Legal target is torso and above. Leg/foot hits do not count.
# Jereeds must be thrown from a minimum 10 feet away. Hits thrown from closer distance do not count.
# If a rider hits a horse, the throwing rider loses a life.
# If a rider hits a horse in the head, the throwing rider is immediately eliminated.
# The bout ends when everyone is out of jereeds or everyone on one team is eliminated.
# You can catch jereeds to "re-arm".
#* Optional version - if you catch a jereed, the thrower loses a life.
